[/caption A conversation between a first generation Irish woman and her Irish born friend in Gillingham in 2013…. “Why don’t we celebrate St Paddy’s Day in Gillingham?”. Tina Lawlor Mottram had heard the same question from her daughter so she set up a group of local people with Irish connections with Sarah Jenkin. Co-Chairs of what became the “Medway St Patrick’s Day Group”, they held meetings at St Mary’s Social Club in Belmont Road in Gillingham. The census showed about 10% Irish extraction and the Committee was set up. A plan was devised starting with the deadline: Sunday 16 March 2014. Therafter followed route planning, publicity, engaging locals to participate and locating the Irish. They turned up in their droves!
